Day 5: Restaurant Review

Ingredient Review
by Luke

Ingredient is, in my opinion, the best place to eat in Leawood. They have a nice outdoor play area next to the restaurant with turf instead of grass and red, orange, and yellow patio furniture. During the winter, this area becomes an ice skating rink.
Ingredient has one of the most creative menus out of the many restaurants I’ve visited. Not only do they have a creative menu, but they also have a wide variety of items on the menu. I suggest the Create-Your-Own Burger or the Create-Your-Own Salad.
You should stop into Ingredient for a snack sometime. They have great hummus and flatbread. Another delicious snack is deviled eggs.
Local bands often play outside Ingredient during the summer. Usually quite a few people come to see those bands.
In my opinion, Ingredient’s food gets 19 out of 21 sweet potato fries because the food is exceptional. For the price, I give it two out of three dollar signs. The popularity earns two and a half out of five people; often many table remain empty.

Day 4: KCUR

Teacher’s note: On Thursday, students practiced reading weather, news, and advertisements for pretend radio broadcasts. They worked on monitoring their volume, pitch, and speed to optimize their vocal deliveries. After that, they wrote and recorded their own news, sports, and/or commercial features. Here is Luke's performance:

Later that day, students toured KCUR studios in Kansas City. As their kind and knowledgeable host, Stephen Steigman—chief of KCUR broadcast operations—provided background information on public radio and some of the technical details that allow the NPR affiliate to beam its news and entertainment programming to radios throughout the Kansas City area. Mr. Steigman then recorded the students as they had a conversation.

Here is the full interview.

The students watched in wonder as Mr. Steigman then took an excerpt of audio from the proceedings and added it to a popular song. During the entire van ride back to the school, students laughed and sang along to the new hit song:

Day 3: KCPT

On Wednesday, students took a tour of the KCPT studios in Kansas City, learning about what distinguishes public television from its commercial counterpart. With those differences in mind, each student wrote and directed a public service announcement. Here is Luke's.

Day 2: KU School of Journalism

MEDIA MANIA TRAVELS TO KU SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM, VISITS NEWS STATION

LAWRENCE, Kan. — On Tuesday, June 2, 11 students from Barstow’s Media Mania summer camp traveled to the University of Kansas’s School of Journalism in Lawrence, Kan., to learn more about the process of creating print, online, and television news.

KU school recruiter Ashley Anguiano led the campers, teacher assistant Matt Gannon, and teacher Mr. Guldin around the Stauffer-Flint and Dole buildings. Ms. Anguiano informed the group about the different aspects of a journalism and mass communications degree at KU. She encouraged anyone pursuing a career in media to write as much and as often as possible.

The tour concluded with a trip to the Media Crossroads, located within the Kansas Union building. Media Crossroads Director Cal Butcher introduced the campers to the “green screen” that KU students use to produce the student news show, Good Morning KU.

Day 1: Tomorrowland Movie Review

Tomorrowland
Review by Luke W.
Rating 91%

Disney’s Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, is one of my favorite Disney movies. The director is Brad Bird. It is a lot better than Disney movies such as Lilo and Stitch and Mulan. This story is ideal for people who like the non-animated side of Disney.

The main plot of Tomorrowland is to stop the time bomb from destroying the world. The main character Casey (Brittany Robertson) has been arrested for trespassing on government property. When she is let off with a warning, she gets her stuff and then finds a pin. When Casey touches it, she realizes it takes her to magical place known as Tomorrowland.

The story contains some parts that are quite pointless at times, like when Athena (Raffey Cassidy) gets hit by a Chevy Silverado. This violence just sort of happens, which makes this scene pointless.

Frank Walker (George Clooney) is the expert on Tomorrowland. At first when he meets Casey, he is not willing to help anybody. Then when Govenor Nix (Hugh Laurie) sends his evil army to Frank’s house, Frank’s security cameras tracks the army, and Frank and Casey barely escape in time. This movie is quite similar many graphic movies. I hope there is a sequel for Tomorrowland!
